Hahn and Williams contemplate the present and future of the AL Central.

Call it a healthy obsession, unhealthy obsession, or maybe even a crush, but it’s pretty clear new White Sox GM Rick Hahn has the Tigers on his mind at the Winter Meetings this week:

“They’re the defending American League champs, they’ve added a great player in Torii Hunter and have Victor Martinez, another great player, (returning from injury). We have to be aware of what we’re chasing. It certainly factors into the team we want to build. As we look around our room and talk to our scouts and coaches and look at our clubs, we can’t look at ourselves and say maybe we’re an 80-82 win team. We can’t think in good faith that’s going to capture the Tigers, given what they’ve accomplished in the players they’ve added.”

Was it this same kind of obsession that eventually forced former GM Kenny Williams to hand over the reigns to Hahn to get out of the day-to-day and jump up to the cushy life of an Executive Vice President? Maybe Kenny realized he had no chance to beat the Tigers. I always knew Kenny was a smart guy.
